Icelandic game studio 1939 Games has announced the opening of a new development unit in Helsinki, Finland, which will focus on mobile game development.

The company was founded in 2015 and launched its first successful game in 2020, Kards on Steam.

A mobile version is currently being developed with an expected release in 2022.

Back in September, the studio announced that its latest $ 5.3 million funding round would be used for Kards mobile development.

One investor was the Finnish company Sisu Game Ventures.

Helsinki is the right place

“There is a special connection between the games industry in Iceland and Finland. 1939 Games not only stands for extraordinary game development, it also deepens the cooperation between the two countries, ”commented Samuli Syvähuoko, founding partner of Sisu Game Ventures.

“The Finnish subsidiary was founded simply because in Finland we have the best mobile game developers. The competition for the best talent in the game industry is tough and we interviewed talent from Finland and abroad, ”explained Mika Levo, the Finnish studio manager from 1939 in Helsinki.

“It has become clear that foreign game industry professionals have a desire to move to Finland to experience the famous Finnish game industry scene,” said Mika Levo, the Finnish director of the Finnish studio in 1939.

Kards is a free-to-play game that has grossed millions of dollars since it was launched. In the summer of 2021, 1939 Games announced that the game had turned in a net profit.
