Brawlhalla x Street Fighter Collaboration Adds Ryu, Chun-Li and Akuma – PlayStation.Blog

Brawlhalla and Street Fighter clash today in one of the free-to-play platform fighter’s biggest crossovers to date. Ryu, Chun-Li and Akuma join Brawlhalla’s cast as Epic Crossovers during a special event and bring their best moves – including Ryu’s Hadoken and Chun-Li’s Spinning Bird Kick – into battle. The event also adds a new game mode: Street Brawl, which adds health bars for Street Fighter-style one-on-one fights. Players can fight on a new map based on Suzaku Castle (Ryu’s classic stage) or get their hands on a Kapukon Yu-style podium (E. Honda’s stage) and get a new knockout effect in Street Fighter Style, an emote., Snap based on Akuma’s Satsui no Hado victory pose and avatars with zangief, the Shadaloo emblem, a hadoken and an animated quarter circle punch.

Of course, such transitions don’t just happen – they are the result of careful planning and collaboration between companies, as well as deep affection and respect for a franchise that the developers at Brawlhalla grew up with. To find out more about how it all came together, we spoke to Josh Kenneth, International Product Manager at Brawlhalla developer Blue Mammoth Games.

How did this crossover come about? Was it something the fans were asking for?

Josh Kenneth: Like every crossover we do, it started because we love the property and its characters. For this one, we thought, “We grew up with Street Fighter and it’s great. Can we do a crossover with them? ”Fans also have a lot of crossovers that they want in Brawlhalla. It’s usually that person’s favorite IP x Brawlhalla, and we’ve seen a lot of Street Fighter suggestions. Brawlhalla is a fighting game so it makes sense that fans would want us to move on to another fighting game. It’s a great fit.

While Brawlhalla and Street Fighter are both fighting games, they have very different styles of gameplay – Brawlhalla lets you take on multiple opponents at the same time and focuses more on freeform combat, while Street Fighter focuses on 1v1 matches and set combos. Why does it make sense to bring them together?

Kenneth: This Brawlhalla x Street Fighter crossover is our first crossover with another fighting game. We’ve made leaps with TV franchises like Adventure Time, TMNT, and WWE, and other video game genres like Rayman, Shovel Knight, and Tomb Raider. So while in the fighting game it makes sense to bring them together, any differences in styles are so fun too. We were able to bridge a gap between traditional 2D fighters and platform fighters with this crossover, and it’s great.

Epic crossover for Petra
Ryu always tries to find the next strongest opponent in order to improve himself. Many of his iconic techniques were brought to Brawlhalla, such as Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, Shoryuken, and Hadoken.

Street Fighter characters have familiar feel and battle rhythms; What was it like adapting these characters to Brawlhalla? What made Petra, Wu Shang and Val the right characters for these epic crossovers?

Kenneth: We knew we wanted the most iconic attacks for every character. For Ryu this meant, for example, Hadoken, Tatsumaki Senpukyaku and Shoryuken. Petra, Wu Shang and Val had just the right weapons and attack styles to match these Street Fighter characters and their iconic attacks. When we had those attacks in the game, everything was just right. It felt so right so quickly! Chun-Li has her Spinning Bird Kick, Akuma has his Zanku Hadoken – everything is there.

In Brawlhalla, every character has two types of weapons. What are the Street Fighter characters armed with?

Kenneth: Each of the two weapons the character uses change their fighting style, so we took this opportunity to split up the iconic attacks on the weapons. Ryu uses gauntlets and a bullet, the bullet being based on the fighter’s willpower (like a hadoken). Chun-Li uses a spear and gauntlet, so she uses her spear to balance as she kicks. Akuma uses the sword and gauntlets, the sword being based on his calls of annihilation and annihilation. Basically, he’s going to use this thing to destroy everything like he likes to do.

Epic crossover for Wu Shang
The strongest woman in the world is sure to teach her opponents a thing or two how to perform a kick. She brings her own techniques to Brawlhalla, such as the Spinning Bird Kick and Kikosho.

How was working with Capcom for this crossover? For example, were they involved in character voting?

Kenneth: Working with Capcom has been great. Her team had creative input and the final decision making on what the Street Fighter characters looked like in Brawlhalla. We brought in our ideas and expertise about how Brawlhalla looks and works, and they gave ideas about what should fit in and what everything looked like. The whole crowd was really nice and fun to work with!

What can you tell us about the new Street Brawl mode?

Kenneth: Imagine taking the legends, movement and weapons system from Brawlhalla and then setting the rules of Street Fighter to everything. Health bar, best of three, little 1v1 – it’s so much fun. There are also walls and a ceiling on the map to really bring the fight up close. I “tested” it a lot during development just to play it as often as possible; Also to give feedback, of course, but every chance I could get to play it, I took that chance!

Ryu, Chun-Li and Akuma are arguably the three most famous characters in the Street Fighter series. Were there any others on the table at some point?

Kenneth: Ah, of course. Street Fighter has dozens of iconic characters, such as Zangief, Dhalsim, M. Bison, Sakura; The list goes on. We’d be hard pressed not to fit Zangief anywhere in this crossover, so we included him as an avatar; He’s just one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, and we know how popular he is with the fans. We really did our best to incorporate as much fan favorite (and our favorite) Street Fighter stuff into this crossover as we could.

Epic crossover for Val
Focused on defeating the gods, the master of the fist is ready to really make them tremble to pieces. He will achieve ultimate power with his Tatsumaki Zankukyaku and Zanku Hadoken techniques, among others..

How does the art team translate characters into the Brawlhalla art style while still maintaining their identity?

Kenneth: Cant praise the Brawlhalla art team enough. Each and every one of them is amazing. Since they are well versed in the signature Brawlhalla art style and are always big fans of the crossover characters we bring into the game, they have a great foundation to start with. That means they can identify the most important aspects of the characters’ designs and bring them into the Brawlhalla style. They also work closely with our partners like Capcom to make sure everything is translated well and every character feels just right. Honestly, I’m sure the graphics team could somehow fit any character into Brawlhalla.

What makes Suzaku Castle a clear choice for the map? Have you considered any other classic Street Fighter locations?

Kenneth: There were so many options like Battle Harbor and the Casino, but Suzaku Castle just yells “Welcome to Street Fighter!” whenever you see it. It’s Ryu’s stage in the Street Fighter games so it just felt right. We also liked the Kapukon Yu bathhouse stage from Street Fighter II, so we made a podium out of it – another example of how we can put great Street Fighter stuff in where we could! Like Zangief, we just couldn’t have a Street Fighter crossover without it. Which also means that E. Honda is here in spirit. We hope everyone is enjoying the Brawlhalla x Street Fighter Crossover as much as we enjoyed making it!

Street Brawl mode can now be played in Brawlhalla on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (via backward compatibility), and Ryu, Chun-Li and Akuma can be purchased as Epic Crossovers. All Street Fighter content will be available for purchase and play at the end of the event.
