Vladislav Tsopljak discusses methods of boosting a community of players | Pocket Gamer.biz

At Pocket Gamer Connects Digital Next, Neon Doctrine co-founder Vladislav Tsopljak spoke about methods of charging a community of players and the reasons for their development.

Tsopljak lists the three big benefits of building a player community: increasing the visibility of a game, reducing marketing costs, and creating healthy communities to support the game’s credibility.

Tsopljak suggests that preparing a platform on Steam and Discord is very important, as is building social media channels on Twitter and Facebook.

It’s also worth opening an account on the recently launched Guilded to prepare for the platform’s growth in the years to come.

Build up steam

Discussion forums and the use of community functions, along with several store language options, are important aspects of Steam.

In his lecture, Tsopljak strongly advised paying attention to the Chinese reviews on Steam, as China does not allow servers on which users speak. Hence, for a company looking to build a player base in China, Steam reviews are their means of providing feedback.

Community features like adding awards in Steam are also worth using, as a game that appears to be more active will get more attention through the algorithm and thereby reach a wider audience.

Event announcements should also be posted on Steam, especially seasonal events as these are very popular with gamers.

Closed betas are also popular, with animated click-to-sign-up advertisements being an effective way to attract players to them. Tsopljak also suggested adding closed beta players to the game balance, especially if they provide useful feedback as players “really enjoy” it.

Benefits of Discord

Applying for a verified discord is mandatory, and it will be easy for publishers to get confirmation. New game makers are also likely to be verified.

It is beneficial to have a custom URL for your Discord channel to make a game easier to find.

Tsopljak advised on Discord bots and said: “The best moderation bot on Discord is without a doubt Gaius Cicereius.”

He advised against setting up too many channels in Discord and sticking to simple channels instead. He also suggested finding moderators by reaching out to active people in the community rather than looking through applications.

Finally, Tsopljak talked about hosting events and even playing other games with the community; This is a good exposure and creates a connection with the player base.

Being consistent and active once or twice a day gives players a reason to be part of the community.
