Nintendo Sales Panic: US NPD Group Results for October 2021 – News

Nintendo’s first month of US sales for the Switch OLED has sparked a new, extended series of wins in the console space that the company is hoping for, according to the NPD Group.

All data is in US dollars from October 3rd to October 30th unless otherwise noted. Nintendo does not showcase digital sales in the survey, although some third-party vendors may showcase their eShop sales.

The Switch was the country’s top-selling console in October, both in terms of revenue and units, following the PlayStation 5’s unit gain in September. In an interview with the Washington Post (possible paywall), NoA President Doug Bowser confirmed total sales over the four-week period at 711,000 for all switch versions combined, of which 314,000 were the OLED. According to the same interview, overall sales were only 3% lower than in 2020 (which the $ 350 OLED model didn’t have).

Nintendo’s two retail debuts in October hit the top 10 on the combined sales charts. Metroid Dread (October 8) was the third best-selling game of the month, only following the multiplatform games Far Cry 6 (Ubisoft) and Back 4 Blood (2K). The same WaPo interview confirmed Metroid Dread sales at 854k in the 23-day sales period, although it’s not clear whether Bowser’s reported figure includes eShop sales or just physical sales of the game. We contacted Nintendo for clarification. NPD confirmed that US dollar sales for Metroid Dread are the highest in series history, “nearly doubling” Metroid Prime’s launch month: note that Dread’s MSRP is $ 10 higher. The other debut, Mario Party Superstars (October 29), came in 8th despite being on sale for only two days.

Other Nintendo titles in the top 20 are: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (11th), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (14th), Animal Crossing New Horizons (15th) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (20th) ). Third-party providers with Switch versions include FIFA 22 (6th), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (7th, only on Switch as cloud version), NBA 2k22 (10th), Minecraft (16th), Diablo II Resurrected ( 18th) and Mortal Kombat 11 (19th).

The full switch top 10 for the period:

  1. Metroid horror
  2. Mario party superstars
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
