Familiar Souls-style gameplay elements
Before you jump into the new, here are some of the basic Souls gameplay elements to look forward to in Elden Ring:
Tough bosses – From the hammer-throwing grave guardian to the energy blades hurled by Margit the Fell Omen, the boss fights offered offer a challenge for Souls fans. Addicting attack animations fit into devastating attacks and lead you to study their movements and react in order to survive these battles.
Ordinary enemies hit hard – Greed and laziness are punished. Don’t underestimate common ghouls or random enemies on horses in the field. They will end you if you drop your guard.
Backstabs and parades – Block, roll, parry and stab your way through the fight. Hard-earned muscle memory from previous From Software games will come in handy.
Fight and aim – The bread and butter of handing out light and heavy attacks feels similar, but with a subtle suppleness that affects the entire gameplay. Sighting enemies and switching between targets in the middle of a battle feels easy and intuitive.
Level up – Collect runes (also known as experience points) by defeating enemies and use them to level up in “places of grace” discovered in the world (similar to campfires in Souls titles). You will drop runes if you are defeated, so make sure to remember the caches you lost.
Significant changes to the Souls-style gameplay
Guidance of grace – Shimmering trails of light extend from Sites of Grace, offering vague suggestions to steer your adventure into fascinating areas.
Open world – The Lands Between is a large open world populated with powerful enemies, hidden treasures, side dungeons, and other places of interest to discover. The vast area made me think about what might be beyond the horizon. Unlimited endurance outside of combat kept me moving towards my next goal.
map – This key tool makes navigating the more open world smooth while maintaining the key element of discovery. Collect map fragments to complete terrain details on your map and travel quickly to the Places of Grace from almost every location except the interiors of dungeons. You can also place a beacon on the map for easy navigation.
An inviting journey – Elden Ring contains From Software’s Gothic castles, ominous dungeons and sinister enemies. However, traversing the lively, green cliffs of the Lands Between adds a wondrous sense of adventure to the overall experience. For me, this meant a sense of excitement while exploring the open world – a satisfying contrast to the atmospheric tension and blind corners of dark dungeons.
Ambient music – The world of Elden Ring has an intimate quiet solitude that Souls fans have come to appreciate. However, where some From Software titles essentially reserved background music for boss fights, the Lands Between hummed with more subtle ambient music. The atmospheric tracks help make the open world feel even more alive.
Leap(!) – Contrary to the ingrained nature of past Souls games, a new jump allows you to overcome obstacles on the field. In addition, you can make a powerful jump attack at any point in combat.
Reduction of fall damage – What goes up has to come down again. Unlike the punishing falls in previous From Software adventures, players can fall from a high cliff and suffer little to no fall damage. This optimization invites players to explore the exciting world with more courage. But remember to look before you jump so you don’t stumble into a group of giant crabs or other threatening enemies.
Day / night cycle – The sun rises and sets creating different moods as you explore the Lands Between. To see the setting sun throw pink on the still waters of a swamp is a fascinating sight. Temporary weather events like a rain shower also pop up to change the mood.
Craft items – Collected resources from flora and fauna can apparently be processed into useful objects at any time. Turn animal bones into throwing knives or combine flammable objects into an improvised bomb.
Side dungeons – Souls fans know that exploring optional areas is part of the experience, and Elden Ring integrates these offshoot dungeons in a sleek way. For example, caving in a wolf-infested mine ends with a hectic boss fight against the devastating beastmaster. Once defeated, collect the treasure and activate a warp point to return to the beginning of the dungeon.
Defeat enemy groups, charge bottles – Defeating certain groups of enemies in the field will replenish your bottles. An added incentive to take down groups of enemies after a fight has started. This varies depending on the type of bottle and enemy group. Of course, you can always refill your flasks by resting in a place of grace.
Summonable mount – Move quickly through the expansive world by summoning your spectral mount out of nowhere. Attacking enemies on horseback is efficient and satisfying, but be careful not to get knocked down or you will become mortally vulnerable. Bring a fallen mount back to life by using a charge from the Flask of Crimson Tears.
Vertical exploration – As you mount up, keep an eye out for massive updrafts that you can jump into for extreme altitude. The elevated vantage point can help you reach new areas or quickly escape danger.
Cooperative collecting of runes – Good Samaritans who help their friends advance in their world can transfer collected runes back to their main game when they are done in co-op.
Summoning Pools – These small markings are around the Lands Between. Summoning Pools are the only way to summon other players to help out in the Elden Ring dungeons.
Flask of wondrous physics – A new bottle to customize preparations with unique effects. Collect and mix different elements to achieve different results, such as a temporary stamina increase and a violent area explosion.
Ashes of war – Items that you can collect and use to give your weapons elemental powers or to give the weapon additional abilities, such as conjuring a magical blade or providing protection for the player
spirits – Call for help in the middle of a battle with a range of available helpers with different skills and attributes. A new way to get NPC help that has helped many Souls players.
Run away! – The open world offers more escape routes. Withdraw from a fight when overwhelmed, which is especially useful when roaming mini-bosses attack. Of course, this is not an option in boss chambers or cramped dungeons.
Caravan hijacking – You can spot cumbersome giants pulling a huge cart through the world surrounded by a contingent of enemies. Clear out these enemies carefully to claim the riches of the caravan yourself. Like the sturdy Crucible armor above.
Goodbye for the time being! Venture into the lands in between when Elden Ring launches on PS5 and PS4 on February 25th.
