Unity to acquire Weta Digital Tools and 275 employees for $ 1.6 billion | Pocket Gamer.biz

Game tech company Unity has acquired elements of New Zealand SFX company Weta Digital for $ 1.625 billion in cash and Unity stock.

Founded by Peter Jackson, best known for his work on The Lord of the Rings films, the company will bolster Unity’s technology in terms of film production and film-style special effects.

For its $ 1.6 billion, Unity acquired ownership of Weta’s tools, pipeline, and 275 – but not all – of its engineering staff.

Examples of the proprietary tools Unity will now have access to are Manuka, Lumberjack, Loki, Squid, Barbershop, HighDef, and CityBuilder.

It will also receive Weta’s collaborative data platform and asset library.

However, Weta’s separate prop company and their special effects teams are not part of the deal.

Now open to everyone

“We are thrilled to democratize these industry-leading tools and bring to life the genius of Sir Peter Jackson and Weta’s amazing engineering talent for artists everywhere,” said John Riccitiello, President and CEO of Unity.

“By combining the power of Unity and Weta Digital, the tools and technology that created characters and scenes from the world’s most famous films like Avatar, Lord of the Rings and Wonder Woman, it will enable an entirely new generation of creators to transform and distribute breathtaking RT3D content. “

The proposed acquisition is expected to be completed by Unity in the fourth quarter of 2021 and is subject to customary closing conditions.
