Bethesda Game Studios is committed to single player games

Bethesda Game Studios, the developer of The Elder Scrolls, Starfield and Modern Fallout, is still “absolutely” committed to single-player games, according to Creative Director Todd Howard – but that doesn’t mean it won’t experiment with adding social elements to solo games. Experience.

During an episode of IGN Unfiltered that covered the 10th anniversary of Skyrim, Starfield, The Elder Scrolls 6, and more, Howard was asked if the studio was still focusing on developing single-player after making the massively multiplayer Fallout 76 Play focused.

Howard replied, “Definitely,” and later added, “It’s part of us, it’s what we love about games.” From what little we know about each project, the next two games will be from BGS , Starfield, and The Elder Scrolls 6, both likely to be largely single-player games in terms of the developer’s most popular work.

Howard pointed out that even the studio’s big multiplayer experiment added an expansion that made more single-player play possible: Solo experience is very, very strong. “Wastelanders was a free update that added human NPCs, a new storyline, and more , which we said felt like a real Fallout game.

However, Howard clearly sees opportunities to allow some kind of interaction between players within the confines of a traditional single player game. “There are several ways to talk about adding social elements to a game that I don’t think they take away from [the solo experience]”he added.” We looked at some of these and didn’t publish them or things on paper, things we’d like to try in our games. So I don’t want to rule that out. “

Howard didn’t go into detail about what those social elements could be, but you could use Death Stranding as a guide to see how social elements can affect a single-player open world. In Hideo Kojima’s game, players worked together to build structures and provide tips to others as they traveled the world alone. It is possible that Starfield or The Elder Scrolls 6 similarly mirror the effect of many players going on adventures alone.

However, Howard and his team seem ready at the moment to venture back into more familiar waters with the next few games. “Fallout 76 was really a great experience for us, and a great learning experience,” he said, “but our passion is behind it: ‘Who are you going to be? This world is for you, make it your own. ‘”

Howard talked about much, much more in his IGN Unfiltered interview – including why Starfield was a “now or never” project and that an idea for Fallout 5 exists but is unlikely to become a reality for many years to come.
