There are loads of crazy, fast-paced platformer available on mobile. Some of them focus on small challenges, others expand their scope to give you something more hearty to chew on. Super Mombo Quest tries to fit into both camps, and it makes a pretty good fist out of it.
In the game you play a strange purple monster with a big sloppy tongue. You can jump, double jump, climb the wall, and sprint. They hop on critters to kill, and there are plenty of shiny things to collect.
The game has a Metroidvania twist – big levels where you have to go back, teleport, and discover secrets, but on top of that, minor challenges. With every new screen there are small achievements to be unlocked – usually you collect all the gems and perform a so-called mombo combination.
This includes killing everything in a set amount of time, hopping quickly to keep a combo bar full, and collecting gems to replenish between attacks. It adds a decent, hectic thrill to the experience, but it can be a little frustrating at times when the touchscreen controls let you down.
As you complete the various challenges you will be given coins that you can spend to unlock gates to delve deeper into the game. There are also teleport points that you can use when making shortcuts. Return to your village base and you can spend your gems on a variety of upgrades.
Everything looks nice here and the platforming is just right for the most part. The controls can be a little sticky as mentioned earlier, but when they work there is a brilliant flow to Super Mombo Quest that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Balancing two different platform styles can be a challenge, but Super Mombo Quest manages it with aplomb and a no small measure of charm. This is a great game, and you owe it to yourself to try it out.
