Recall Paprium? We covered the announcement of this Mega Drive / Genesis side scrolling hunter a few years ago. Created by the team behind it Pier SolarIt was intended to push the 16-bit console to its absolute limits with special technology built into the cassette. Lots of people pledged their money based on that pitch alone, but that was in 2017 and at the time of writing, many people who donated their money are still waiting for their copy (ourselves included).
We’ve documented Paprium’s difficult development on this site a few times, but things took an odd turn last year when the game seemed to be done out of the blue and began to trickle (very slowly) to those who had backed it – then even this process came to a standstill.
WaterMelon Games has since been told that it had problems getting the funds paid to it through PayPal (although it hasn’t exactly explained why it was) and that the completion of Paprium’s development put the company in heavy debt Has. A new Kickstarter campaign is seen as a way to bring the game to a wider audience through modern systems and secure the funds necessary to fulfill the orders for the Mega Drive version a few years ago.
Amazingly, the Paprium Kickstarter has raised over £ 325,000 ($ 443,000) to date, surpassing its original goal of £ 220,061 ($ 299,999). That means the game will be coming to Switch, and some of the other stretch goals include a pint-sized Game Gear version and a Dreamcast port. According to WaterMelon, those who are still waiting for the Mega Drive edition will ultimately are getting their copies due to the success of this campaign – but there seems to be a little time to wait.
Are you one of those people who pledged their money for this crowdfunding campaign? Or maybe you’re like us and still waiting for that Mega Drive game you bought in 2017? Let us know with a comment.
