Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will close on January 31, 2022 | Pocket Gamer.biz

In a differentiated blog post, Niantic has announced that it will discontinue its location-based game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

The game will be removed from app stores on December 6th, which will also include the removal of the IAPs.

The game will stop working on January 31, 2022 and all social channels will also be closed.

However, to some extent, the only surprise is that the game didn’t close earlier.

Launched back in the summer of 2019, it had sales of around $ 12 million in its first month, but already saw a sharp drop in activity and sales before the Covid-19 outbreak when 2019 ended.

More like later than before

Running a global location-based game like this is an expensive business, even for a company as successful as Niantic.

However, this path is not mentioned in the final blog post. Instead, the narrative arc is closed for the remaining three months of activity as the players “put an end to the misfortune”.

It’s an interesting contextualization and was no doubt created in collaboration with IP licensor Warner Bros. and PortKey Games, their game development studio for everything related to Harry Potter.

Of course, there are plenty of other Harry Potter mobile games out there, including NetEase’s Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, which was one of the biggest hits in China in 2021 and is slated to hit international markets in 2022.
