Nintendo’s lawyers strike again, this time against a Mario NFT game of chance

An unofficial game project that used Super Mario assets to promote an NFT-based gambling platform caught Nintendo’s attention. so we all know what happens next.

As reported by Kotaku, a cryptocurrency system called the “1-UP Platform” is preparing to launch this year that will give users the opportunity to participate in a battle royale-style game where players can bet on games to earn NFTs (a controversial method of owning digital files that uses blockchain technology). The problem here – or at least one of the problems – is that the battle royale itself appears to be full of stolen assets.

Below are some early footage of the game in action.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo has already started tackling the project right away; as a Twitter user @jyfirma_ discovered, at Nintendo’s request, videos about the project have already been removed from YouTube.

Kotaku notes that the Telegram admin of the 1-UP platform known as “Link” has since defended the project, calling it “a cool indie concept”:

“I’m a community manager for an anonymous team working on a cool indie concept. The goal was to innovate on an amazing idea from infernoplus in 2019. Nintendo closed it down for innovation and is known for it. We did just created a beefed up version of it with a combat system. The aim was to innovate privately within the community to show what is possible when we all bring in new ideas. We just feel like business ideas are drying up and almost dead. “

They go on to say that the stolen assets were only present as proof of concept and will later be removed, calling on the “Nintendo Simps” who helped popularize the game. You sound nice, don’t you?

“For all Nintendo Simps who have a panic attack, fear not. It was private test videos that were posted to grow the community. When we go live, the entire game will have custom graphics without the original Nintendo fan sprites. This was just a proof of concept. The engine is bespoke and used for other original games. However, the enthusiasm is great. At least it gets people talking about new ideas. “

The 1-UP platform wasn’t shy about the inclusion of Mario, however, with a September blog post that even described the project as something that “would bring Mario and his friends to the blockchain,” all wrapped up in “a 2D.” -Battle Royale Concept “. based on classic retro games that we all know and love. “If Mario was a selling point, was it really your intention to remove him from the game?

Currently, 1-UP’s blog page is still using Mario assets without Nintendo’s consent. We assume it’s only a matter of time before Nintendo pushes it further.
