PAX South canceled indefinitely as it won’t expand, pandemic effects

Usually held in San Antonio, Texas every year after its start in 2015, PAX South has been indefinitely canceled and closed by the PAX team after failing to expand and seeing the same growth as the other PAX events . On this basis and “reinforced by the effects of COVID-19”, they made the decision to end PAX South “for the foreseeable future”.

You can read PAX’s full statement below:

When the first PAX took place in 2004, we expected no more than a hundred locals. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect that more than 3,000 passionate fans would arrive or that our one-off event would become a series in five cities around the world. While each of our other events is thriving, some of which attract hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the world, PAX South has not expanded and to some extent has remained the same show it was when it opened in 2015.

Given this reality and exacerbated by the effects of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to end PAX South for the foreseeable future.

The heart of PAX South lives in the incredible memories we have made in our Texas community and with the international fans and enforcers who have come to support the show. We apologize for all of our friends who looked forward to the show’s return in 2022 – we join them – but we hope to see you again at our other events as a PAX return. You will forever be part of our family and the legacy of PAX. We learned a lot from you and future shows will be better for it.

Thank you San Antonio for always embodying the PAX spirit by welcoming home players and the people who do the things we love.

-The PAX team

PAX has already had a turbulent couple of years thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, which all but canceled personal events and gatherings for 2020 and much of 2021. Interestingly, in 2015, PAX South set a record for the highest attendance of a first year at the PAX event, but it seems like the momentum couldn’t keep up. In connection with the current state of the world, which is still pushing events and face-to-face gatherings heavily into the background – PAX West was much smaller this year than in the past due to the pandemic, although given the circumstances it has exceeded expectations – It appears that the PAX organizers were faced with some tough decisions that ultimately resulted in PAX South being cut.

This doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of PAX South returning or the opening of additional PAX events in other cities, but PAX East and West seem to cover the North American market sufficiently – and spread out throughout the year – that the event continues in a third central US city just doesn’t make sense. (The PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia is a tabletop event that serves a very different purpose than the other two.)

PAX West recently took place as a physical event in early September, while PAX Australia took place in early October. PAX Unplugged is planned for December. They haven’t announced the schedule for 2022 yet, although we now know that PAX South won’t be there.
