Deltarune Chapter 2 is available right now on Switch, completely free. It’s from the same creator who made Undertale – in fact, the title itself is an anagram of Undertale – and to celebrate its release, Nintendo Japan has secured an interview with Toby Fox in person.

A massive disclaimer here: there are large chunks of the interview that Google Translate didn’t do really well on, so apologize in advance … but here are some highlights!

“My feelings are now … tired. I want a day off. May I [speak to] Mario for a moment? “Take me to Yoshi Island”. I also want to eat this green fruit with an extended deadline. If you eat it for breakfast, you can overslept 27 hours a day, right? “
– Toby Fox, how is he

Fox actually hired a team of people to help him finish the game (you can see the full credits here) and he talks about how this has impacted development:

“Chapter 2 itself actually took a year and a half to develop. There were a lot of things before we could fully begin development. However, three years is long … I’m a little sorry making everyone wait so long …

I programmed “Chapter 1” and “UNDERTALE” all by myself, but now I haven’t been able to program for a long time because I injured my wrist. About 90% of “Chapter 2” is programmed by another team member. Yes, I’ve been a director since that time (imagine a professional dog in a beret). “

Leading a team comes with its own set of challenges, however, and Fox says that “leading people is easy” but in fact it is “10.2 times harder” to get them to do what’s on your mind is than doing it yourself.

Regarding Chapter 3, Fox says (jokingly!) That development time increases by a year every time someone asks when it will come out. It looks like 7 chapters are planned, and Fox says they are yet to come:

But serious story, as soon as chapters 3, 4 and 5 are done I want to publish it. It took a year and a half to develop Chapter 2 so it’s a simple calculation … yeah, that’s a lie !? Help!

Finally, a fun fact from Toby Fox, who studied Japanese and was able to help localize the game, carried out by Industry Legends 8-4 (who also localized Return of the Obra Dinn, Hades, and Firewatch):

The Japanese word 「グ ラ マ ー」 (glamor) has a slightly different meaning than the English word “glamor”. In English it means “luxury” or “shiny”, but in Japanese 「グ ラ マ ー」 means something like “big breasts and big buttocks”.

For the first time I knew that the background music for “UNDERTALE” was against Mettaton and the Japanese track was “Brilliant Death Fight”.

The original English title is “Death By Glamor”, so if this is a title like “Killed by Glamor” in Japanese … Japanese [would] say, “Mettaton is an enemy who suffocates the player with large breasts and buttocks.” I may have misunderstood.

The rest of the interview is full of spoilers, so we’ll leave it at that, but if you want to check it out for yourself, head over to the Nintendo Japan blog!
