ByteDance fires Ohayoo employees | Pocket Gamer.biz

The recent downsizing from the TikTok ByteDance outfit has rocked China’s gaming community.

ByteDance was previously an aggressive company buyer and borrower and is believed to have laid off many junior staff from casual and hypercasual developer Ohayoo.

The studio was founded in 2018 with the aim of capturing users of its short video apps, according to a former employee who spoke to the South China Morning Post.

Its games have been downloaded more than 500 million times.

It is assumed that the beginning of 100 employees will be affected.

The Ohayoo studio has around 350 employees, and a report on Leiphone said the studio asked 79 employees to either go home or apply for other positions within the company.

However, the report found that some internal positions are limited, which means that many employees are most likely to leave the company.

China’s new rules

After President Xi Jinping highlighted gambling addiction as a social problem, players are now required to set up accounts with ID and children are only allowed to play three hours a week on weekends and holidays.

Since July, China’s gambling regulator suspended license approvals for new games.

The impact on casual gaming has been severe. Mainly, this is because they have less loyal users than hardcore console games.

As of November 2020, Ohayoo had released nine casual games, each with sales of at least $ 15 million. It was according to Xu Peixiang, the studio’s former general manager, who resigned in August this year.
