Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop can’t ruin Vicious because Vicious actually sucks

Since Netflix unveiled the Cowboy bebop Opening titles last month, fans of the original sci-fi anime seem polarized ahead of the premiere of the upcoming live-action adaptation. The reception is split between those who think the series looks like a fun, fresh take on a popular anime classic and those who think it looks like a sadly confident fan video – albeit on an admittedly huge budget.

This criticism was directed against everything from the editing of the trailers, the appearance of the stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir and Daniella Pineda in their costumes to the appearance of supporting characters like Vicious, Spike Spiegel’s archenemy, played by Alex Hassell (On site). And to be honest with you, him does look ridiculous. Look at the man. He looks like a guest judge Iron cook who is about to reveal the secret ingredient. He looks like Lurch The Addams family Cosplay as Alucard from Castlevania. It looks like a Rhaegar Targaryen Spirit Halloween costume.

Those aren’t necessarily the makers of the Netflix show who are wrong. In fact, I would go so far as to argue that Alex Hassell’s take on Vicious is exactly the same as the 1998 character. It’s impossible for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy bebop To “ruin” Vicious because of the character of Vicious in Cowboy bebop was terrible at first.

Cowboy Bebop-creator Shinichirō Watanabe introduces Vicious for the first time with silent flashbacks and contextual information in the fifth episode “Ballad of Fallen Angels”. He is a senior member of the Red Dragon Syndicate, a criminal organization Spike was previously a part of before he became a bounty hunter. Vicious and Spike were former partners and friends when they were younger, and both were cared for by an older Red Dragon member named Mao Yenrai. A rift developed between the two of them when Spike fell in love with Julia, Vicious’ then girlfriend.

In “Jupiter Jazz Part 1 & 2” it is revealed that at some point in Vicious’ life, probably after Spike left the Red Dragon Syndicate and faked his own death, he was next to Gren. served as a soldier in a war on the moon of Titan, a former comrade whom he accused of serving as a spy and testified against in a military tribunal. Vicious is a sadistic, cold, bloodthirsty and clearly “malicious” man (that’s his name!) Who wants power and will stop at nothing to get it. He also wields a katana and has a large crane-like bird that is filled with explosives as a pet. And that was it.

Vicious is the primary slide for Spike and what the series is closest to to a major recurring character aside from the core cast of Spike, Faye, Jet, and Ed. He appears in a total of five of the series’ 26 episodes. Nonetheless, he is more of a vaguely antagonistic presence than a character himself. His dialogue consists almost exclusively of terse, sinister sayings such as “When angels are thrown out of heaven, they become devils” or “Cloudy climate is none of my business”. He’s a one-note anime antagonist with no apparent bow or motivation other than being an asshole. In contrast to Spike, a personable and multi-faceted protagonist with deep personality and nuances, Vicious pales in comparison. He’s a character that is cool only for 13 year olds.

So I’m not saying I never thought Vicious was cool when I saw the series during their original adult swim run. And there are arguably much angular and thinly characterized anime villains than Vicious – check out Raditz from Dragon ball Z, or Shogo Makishima Psycho pass. I’m just saying it’s been a long time since I was 13. I now expect more when it comes to characterization in the anime I’m watching.

For example, there is Mereum, the main opponent of Hunter X Hunter‘s Chimera Ant arc, arguably more ruthless and violent than Vicious ever was; His development along the arc leads the audience to understand and even empathize with him as he struggles to reconcile the human and semi-insectic aspects of his own nature. My hero academy‘s Tomura Shigaraki essentially begins the series as the lackey apprentice of All Might’s archenemy, All For One, before gradually developing into a formidable and shrewd opponent himself. Even Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood‘s father has his own bow as the former dwarf homunculus, a creature incapable of performing alchemy on its own, seeks deity in his tenacious pursuit of absolute knowledge and self-empowerment. Vicious pales in comparison to these examples simply in that he has no discernible bow or target that defines his goals in contrast to Spikes, aside from the simple craving for power for its own sake.

For such a lively and original series as Cowboy bebopUsing several very different genres such as science fiction, noir, and westerns in creating his own colorful characters and universe, Vicious is a disappointingly shallow sadboy nihilist with a tendency to sit on ledges and in general Be a crawler. If anything, the costume design for Alex Hassell’s live-action portrayal of Vicious is a perfect representation of that. With over two decades between the production of the original anime and the live-action adaptation of Netflix, there is more than enough room to improve Spike’s archenemy.

Talking to Polygon, Cowboy bebop Showrunner André Nemec said that developing the story of John Cho’s portrayal of Spike also meant concretizing his relationship with Julia, played by Elena Satine von The gifted one. Nemec describes Julia in the original anime as “more of an idea than a character,” a description that could also be used to describe Vicious. Whether or not Vicious will get the same amount of attention remains to be seen when Netflix Cowboy bebop Premiere this fall.
