PUBG Mobile is the most downloaded mobile game in the world | Pocket Gamer.biz

Sensor Tower has published its Q3 2021 Data Digest, which covers the period from July 1 to September 30, 2021.

Mobile games were the most downloaded category of apps on the App Store and Google Play.

Game downloads in the App Store reached 2.1 billion installs, an 8 percent decrease from the previous year.

By comparison, game downloads on Google Play topped 11.5 billion, a 2.6 percent decrease from a year earlier.

Overall, the most downloaded mobile game in the world across both marketplaces for the third quarter of 2021 was Tencent’s PUBG Mobile, powered by the release of Battlegrounds India.

PUBG Mobile downloads suffered a decline after the game was removed from Indian app marketplaces from Q3 2020 to Q2 2021. PUBG Mobile was last at the top of the global download charts in the 4th quarter of 2018.

PUBG Mobile was followed by My Talking Angela 2 by Outfit7 and Garena Free Fire by Garena. Free Fire has remained in the top 5 mobile games for the past six quarters, with India being the most important market.

For the App Store, Pokémon Unite was the most downloaded mobile game, despite the fact that it released towards the end of the quarter on September 22nd and had 18 million downloads in nine days.

By comparison, My Talking Angela 2 was the world’s most installed game on Google Play, released this quarter with approximately 55 million downloads.

In the US, Pokémon Unite was the most downloaded game on both app marketplaces, with over 7 million installs. Over 85 percent of the downloads came from the App Store, only 15 percent from Google Play.

Roblox has maintained its position among the top five games in the US as of Q2 2020, with Q3 2021 being its best number 2 position for App Store downloads of all time. This was spurred on by musical experiences in the game, such as virtual concerts by KSI and Twenty One Pilots.

On Google Play, Hypercasual games dominated the top ten downloads, with eight Hypercasual games in the top ten. Rollic Games’ Arrow Fest, owned by Zynga, topped the quarter, with two other Zynga Hypercasual games in the top 20, Hair Challenge and Queen Bee.

Garena Free Fire took Fortnite’s place as the number one mobile shooter game in the US in the third quarter of 2021 year over year.

The most downloaded game in Asia during the quarter was PUBG Mobile, which outpaced more than 200 percent quarter-over-quarter growth in the region. This was driven by the release of Battlegrounds Mobile in India, which, if it doesn’t include the game’s downloads, is only up 2 percent qoq.

On the App Store, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, which was released in China on September 9, achieved nearly nine million installs for the quarter, almost as many as Honor of Kings for the entire quarter.

On Google Play, PUBG Mobile topped the charts with more than 45 million downloads, including over 36 million from India. The top genre in Asia was arcade, with five titles in the top 20 in the genre.

Garena’s growth

This quarter marks a year since Epic Games removed Fortnite from both marketplaces, allowing other mobile shooters to take its place.

The game that followed in Fortnite’s footsteps in the US was Garena Free Fire, which ranked third for total mobile game sales in the country. Free Fire had its best year ever for a mobile shooter game based on US revenue.

Garena hasn’t always done well in the US, with a low adoption rate since its launch in August 2017. However, the game bridged that void with a much higher revenue per download of around $ 35 than competitors in the genre like Call of Duty Mobile or PUBG-Mobile.

The shooter genre had three games in the top 15 for the third quarter of 2021: Free Fire, COD Mobile, and PUBG Mobile.

Garena recently launched Free Fire Max, a graphically enhanced version of Free Fire with new features, at the end of the third quarter of 2021 on September 28th.
