PS5 update for October 20th improves system performance

Today, October 20th, a new PS5 system software update has arrived. The main purpose of version: 21.02-04.03.00 is once again to “improve system performance” without further details on the changes. The good news is that a small update comes with a relatively small file size of only 913.7MB.

The patch notes for the update simply say, “This system software update will improve system performance,” which is usually a code word for security fixes and software upgrades behind the scenes. It follows on from another minor update a few days ago that has also improved system performance.

While this may not sound particularly interesting, SVP of Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino said there are “interesting, exciting, fantastic” ideas in future updates, some of which were brewed even before the console was released in 2020. Some of these changes could even be introduced in minor system software updates like today, although you would hope Sony would let us know if it did. One that we are aware of is the addition of a new section to the PS5 PlayStation Store that will allow gamers to see the latest releases in one convenient place.

The last major update for PlayStation 5 arrived last month and enabled the SSD expansion bay for all console owners. Other improvements included the customization of the control center, an improved game base, platform displays of the game library, screen reader controls and 3D audio support for TV speakers. The PlayStation app was not neglected either and was given the opportunity to display friends’ share screen transmissions. Sony is currently running a limited beta in Canada and Japan that will automatically upload appropriate screenshots and game clips to the app for sharing.

PlayStation is enjoying a successful week for their newest console. It was first announced that the PS5 had become the best-selling console in the US in September 2021, breaking the Nintendo Switch’s 33-week record. Then the console won a Good Design Gold Award from the Japanese government for its “unparalleled 3D curved surfaces” and unique exterior design.
