Games are not allowed in China in August or September | Pocket Gamer.biz

Chinese players are facing increasing restrictions and now it also appears that they will have fewer games to play.

No new games were approved by Chinese regulators in August or September, according to the South China Morning Post.

In contrast, 33 games were approved in February, while 1,411 games were approved in 2020.

Each game must be reviewed for content and certified by various government organizations for publication.

The stop in admissions appears to be due to new rules that require games to “emphasize correct values and an accurate understanding of China’s history and culture.”

This means that developers now need to revise aspects of their games in order to release them.

Bad days

This move follows the introduction of the game rating and rating policy system in April 2021, with each game classified into five categories for approval.

  • Value orientation,
  • Original design,
  • Production quality,
  • Cultural content and
  • Stage of development

The Chinese Communist Party has been cracking down on various aspects of the gaming industry for years, but the pace of restrictions accelerated in 2021.

This applies not only to games, but to many other sectors as well, from cryptocurrencies to ride-hailing services, fintech and education apps.
