The Jackbox Party Packs are a social godsend; These collections of simple, dynamic mini-games have been a bastion throughout the pandemic. Only one person needs to own the package and then they can host a Discord call or Twitch stream and get everyone in the fun through a web browser. The newest entry, The Jackbox Party Package 8, is a solid new contender to the series, with no games that feel like filler.
Some of these packages are mean, and look forward to seeing you compete against your friends in a bizarre competition. Others are fairly relaxed and can safely be sent to entertain the family during the vacation or to break the ice with acquaintances. The games in 8 all feel a little more focused on delivering a particular experience, and the developers have gotten better at developing their little quirks.
Attractive is great and one of the best games from previous packs. Attractive animation is better. It’s like a wild Pictionary game that gives players absurd captions and limited tools to draw. This is not an artistic endeavor; in fact, the worse you feel, the funnier things get. Attractive animation spices things up even further by giving people two drawings to complete, which then converge to create a basic animation.
This isn’t a huge change, but it’s a new one, and it comes with some fun tools like Episodes too. You can write your own wild phrases or put your friends’ names in with it Attractive animation can pull it up as a topic of a round. It’s a nice tool to stack on top of the base game, and players can avoid getting burned through all the prompts by adding their own. Attractive animation is the headliner of this pack, and it’s great fun – as long as you’ve been on board Attractive Vanilla.
Job Job was my surprise favorite from this pack, and it’s especially great for those who love absurd humor. In Job job, answer all small talk questions. These answers are then passed on to the other players who will have to use their fridge magnet skills to put together a cohesive answer. This is a quick and fun one that is group independent; I would be just as comfortable with friends as I would with my family on Christmas Eve. Also the fact that everything in the Job job The googly-eyed universe is deeply troubling and hilarious, which negates the inherent soul-emptying desperation of a job search.
The survey mine
The survey mine is a super charming survey game. Players have to base their decisions on a difficult question – which of these terrible options can you take best? Then everyone has to guess how their friends responded. The nature of this game means that it is probably best to play with a pre-existing group that is familiar with each other. But for fans of the previous Party Pack Games who focus on interpersonal dynamics, like Party package 6‘S role models, it will be a pleasure.
The wheel of enormous proportions
The wheel of enormous proportions is a simple roulette wheel with a hook. If you want the wheel to prefer you, you can win bigger chunks of it by answering quick-firing quiz questions. The game could give you a huge chunk of John Travolta’s filmography and then ask you which films he danced in. Beat it out of the park and as you get near the wheel your victories will grant you some random slots of the wheel, increasing your chance of winning for you. The only real downside to this mini-game is that the wheel itself – and there’s no better way to say it – is essentially awesome. The game’s imagination is that you are playing travelers trying to get your unique question answered by the title wheel. The wheel is … a little too busy helping you ascend to its spiritual heights. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is easy Diversion.
Arms drawn is probably the most intellectual game in the pack. Everyone is both a murderer and a detective – the goal is to hide your own murders while you expose the others. The game takes a letter of your name and gives it to you as a business card. Then you’ll have to draw a gun around that business card to camouflage it. The “A” in Cass can become a faucet in a claw foot tub, or the “C” can make the handy edge of a mace.
With Jackbox party package 8, Jackbox Games has continued to refine their process so that all of these games are a hell of a lot of fun. Their experience is also reflected in nice quality of life features like a menu that allows me to adjust the volume only once and activate extended timers instead of having to manually check the menu of each mini-game. It’s a small improvement, but a welcome one.
Not a single one of these games is worth the price alone – there are party packs that I call T-piece KO or Quiplash Machine, and none of the games in this pack have the same stickiness and lightness to me. But there are no stinkers either – all of this is something I would like to recommend to a friend or bring out at a meeting. It’s a valuable resource, and I think wherever I go, at least I can invigorate it with something Job job.
