The Scream franchise is back with its biggest meta-horror parody to date. In the first trailer for Scream 5, or technically simple Scream, the franchise is halfway between a sequel and a restart and that’s where it wants to be. The film, which will bring back stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, is slated to hit theaters on January 14, 2022.
Scream has always been unique in that it was both a rise in the slasher genre and one of its best contributions. Each Scream sequel has impaled a new corner of the genre, but with four entries in it, it’s by far the most consistent good slasher series in existence. But lately the slasher has fallen out of favor or just got weird. The Halloween franchise that is still going strong Halloween kills later that month, includes eight sequels in two different continuities as well as two remakes. With a timeline this ridiculous, Scream’s new half restart is going to have an uphill battle to land the satire on a new audience.
In addition to the film’s recurring characters, Scream will also feature a slew of young actors, including Melissa Berrera (In the heights), Jack Quaid (The hunger Games), Kyle Gallner (Dear white people), Jenna Ortega (Iron man 3), Mason Gooding (Booksmart), Mikey Madison (Once upon a time … in Hollywood), Dylan Minnette (Prisoners), Jasmin Savoy Brown (The rest) and Sonia Ammar. All or most of the film’s younger characters seem to have some connection to the kills from the first four films in the franchise, which will make them targets this time around.
Scream 5, for lack of a better title, brings longtime series writer Kevin Williamson as producer along with James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not). This is the first film in the series that is not directed by horror legend Wes Craven, who died in 2015, was the horror comedy 2019 Ready or Not.
