UK Charts: Metroid Dread just had the strongest opening week of any Metroid game ever

Switch Metroid Dread

For the week ending October 9th, data is now available on the UK charts showing that Metroid Dread has become the fastest-selling game in the country’s history.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that the game’s physical launch has dwarfed sales of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for Wii, which previously had the strongest launch numbers in the series, and that it sold three and a half times as many copies as Metroid: Samus Returns managed when it was released in 2017. The digital sales for the title are yet to be announced, which means that Dread’s overall sales will actually be even stronger.

The early success makes it the UK’s fifth largest Switch launch of 2021 to date. only Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Monster Hunter Rise and New Pokémon Snap sold more in their debut weeks.

Elsewhere, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania debuted in eighth place and best-selling on the Switch with a comfortable lead. 70% of those physical copies were moved to Nintendo’s platform, with PS5 accounting for 17%. FIFA 22 remains on top for the second straight week.

Here’s a look at this week’s top ten of all formats:
