A new development version of return recently moved into beta and could indicate a major update on the horizon. The new update is reportedly 6 GB larger than the game’s original file size. While the content of the update is unknown, the mere increase in size could indicate that new features and content may be added to the game in the near future.
The folks at @PlaystationSize on Twitter spotted the update via the PSN database. Although developer Housemarque has released patches for the game that have resolved trophy and save data corruption issues in the past, this is the first time a new update has been made for the return Beta development version since the game was released in April. The file size in itself is sufficient for speculation, although it is important to note that beta versions of games are subject to change.

One of the most requested features by fans is mid-run backups, which can help with runs that can take quite a long time depending on the course of the game. Housemarque also mentioned earlier this year that it was “very active” working on the implementation of the feature. However, the solution would also have to reckon with the game’s inherently rogue nature, arguably having the inability to save as a core mechanic in the middle of a run.
Another possible addition is a photo mode, as we found in our review. Given return is a PS5 exclusivity with absolutely stunning graphics, environment and hostile designs. It’s almost criminal that the game doesn’t have a photo feature on the level of other PlayStation exclusives such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
return has been praised by many, including Hades Creative Director Greg Kasavin and even Sony themselves, who called the game a “mega hit”. Sales have also performed remarkably well given the shortage of PS5s caused by the pandemic, as the game hit over half a million units sold just 3 months after its release.[Source: Gamingbolt]
