Ghostbusters: Afterlife Director Jason Reitman began with a blurry vision: “I saw a girl in my head. She is 12 years old and is picking up a packet of protons in the middle of a field. I didn’t know who she was. I saw this teenager in Ecto 1 and was drifting through fields of wheat. I didn’t know who he was. “And then:” When Harold Ramis died, I knew who they were: They were the Spenglers. ”
The idea of another sequel to the 1984 Ghost hunters The classic, directed by Jason’s father Ivan Reitman, wandered through purgatory for a long time. When the original cast member Ramis passed away in 2014, that seemed to rule out the possibility. But the younger Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan rooted the legacy of Ramis’ character Egon Spengler in the plot and his descendants in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Reitmans father and son gathered together with writer Kenan and actors Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor on Friday at New York Comic Con 2021 to talk about the upcoming film. The original Ghost hunters, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, the late Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, spawned a popular franchise, which included a less well-received one in 1989 Ghostbusters 2 Sequel, cartoons, comic strips and a 2016 restart starring Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones.
A continuation of the first Ghost hunters and Ghostbusters 2, life after death has presented itself as a more serious, Spielbergish version compared to its comedic predecessors. It shows Coon as a single mother and Wolfhard and Grace as their two children moving into a ramshackle farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma. The film is scheduled to be released in November.
The younger Reitman’s directorial work includes indies Juno and Tully. With humor, he revealed the fear of having his father, the director of the original classic, on the set. “Our director’s chairs are closer than they are directly on site [at Comic Con]. They literally touched. That’s wonderful. Most of the time. “He laughed and said,” Imagine for a second that your parents have come to work on all of your decisions and consider the choices you have made. And if you disagree you get into an argument. You can’t say on set dad. “
His father added, “Jason needed to be captain of this great company and find a new way to tell this story. We tried not to fight, but we fought a little. But we were passionate and just tried to find a way to control the passion. ”
The Spengler grandchildren have a legacy to bear. Wolfhard plays the older Spengler grandson Trevor and describes his character as “want”[ing] To be part of a community and to be accepted. He finds that by moving to a new city and bringing his family life and his old roots together. ”
Wolfhard is no stranger to the Ghostbuster overall. “I wonder why [the project around the audition] seemed so mysterious, ”he said. When he found out it was Ghost hunters, he was incredulous that he understood. “I was in Strange things. I had worn it [Ghostbuster] Costume in one episode [of Stranger Things] and I thought it might rub Jason the wrong way. ”
Mckenna Grace, who portrays Spengler’s younger granddaughter, described her character Phoebe as “that strange, awkward girl. She goes to this farmhouse and finds out who her family was and [is] Connection to the grandfather she never knew. ”With the film persistently delayed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was surreal for Mckenna to see her younger and smaller self:“ I look very different [during filming]. My grandma watched the trailer and called my mother to say that I can’t see Mckenna in it. “
Jason Reitman also teased the audience that the panel was going to show an exclusive clip. But he didn’t show a clip – he showed the entire film, much to the cheer of the room. Before the screening, he ended the panel with the words: “I love to stream and it has helped me get through the pandemic. But i love movies. We wanted a movie to be enjoyed with popcorn, screen and sound. “
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be released on November 19th.
