Blizzard Entertainment has appointed Joe Shely as the new Game Director for Diablo IV following the departure of Luis Barriga amid company-wide investigations into misconduct.
Barriga’s departure was confirmed by Activision Blizzard back in August, and although the company did not explain the circumstances of the development, he left at the same time as designer Jesse and McCree World of Warcraft Designer Jonathan LeCraft, both of whom were named in the allegations. Barriga did not appear in the infamous “Bill Cosby Photo” and it is not clear what, if any, part he had in the fiasco.
“We can confirm that Luis Barriga, Jesse McCree and Jonathan LeCraft are no longer with the company,” Activision told Blizzard in August. “We already have a large, talented roster of developers and new leaders have been assigned where appropriate. We are confident that we will continue to progress, provide amazing experiences to our players, and move forward to ensure a safe, productive work environment for everyone. “
A statement from Shely, previously a design director, reads:
Like many of you, our team has pondered recent events. A lot has happened since our last blog and the hard work to practice the values we strive for must continue. In parallel with this important work, the development of Diablo IV also continues.
Over the past few years we’ve put together a strong team with an incredible passion for Diablo IV. You, the Diablo fans, are an important part of this team. With the help of your valuable feedback, we have continuously refined and deepened the gaming experience. We still have a way to go and while a lot has changed, our commitment to the game has been unwavering.
