Science fiction works are often praised for being “made for our time” when they show futuristic dystopias or heavily modified presentations that reinforce a collective fear of global or national issues. Although the CWs 4400 (a restart of The 4400which ran over 4 seasons in the mid-2000s) is not a show about the current Covid-19 pandemic, there is a plan to address it in the story that focuses on lost souls driven out of time.
Executive producers Ariana Jackson and Sunil Nayar and actors Joseph David-Jones (Jharrel), TL Thompson (Dr. Andre), Autumn Best (Mildred), Brittany Adebumola (Shanice), Khailah Johnson (Ladonna), Cory Jeacoma (Logan) , Ireon Roach (Keisha), Jaye Ladymore (Claudette), Derrick A. King (Rev Johnson) and Amarr (Hayden) virtually stopped by New York Comic Con 2021 to share details about their characters.
New start and reinterpretation of the science fiction film CBS Paramount Network Television made by Scott Peters and Renee Echevarria in 2004, 4400 sees over 4,400 people from different time periods disappear without a trace. One day they will be miraculously brought back to what is now Detroit in 2021, with no signs of aging or memory of their disappearance. The delayed 4400 discover that they have “upgrades” or special powers. They are trying to find meaning and a connection in an era unknown to them.
The cast and crew are clear about what special powers – or not – their characters will have. Nayar praised the cast for their performance: “The way you play these characters isn’t that they’re suddenly superheroes. There are real human consequences too [the powers]. “Then he seemed to hold back and said,” Well, those of you with Powers. I cannot spoil those who do not. “
The presence of the 4400 and its social problems challenge the present. Jharrel of what is now Detroit is an advocate of the people trying to function by government rules. “I feel like I rarely see someone for the people navigating a system that isn’t for the people,” said David-Jones. “But seeing someone navigating gives you a chance and a different perspective on what it really is like. Many of us want to find ways and solutions to many of our problems, but things are bureaucratically bound. “
As of today, Keisha is “like Jharrel and doing her best to hold it down in 2021,” said Roach. She added, “She’s a big proponent of the 4400.”
Cory described his Logan as a “plebeian” living in 2021. He admires Logan’s commitment to empathy, but “it bites his chin every now and then. But he takes a lot of blows on the chin. When I read the script, I thought this guy has a steely chin. “
One of the ignorant time travelers, Ladonna, dates back to 2015, just a few years before 2021. Johnson said Ladonna’s “life struggles with balance”. As a person in their twenties, Johnson is referring to the struggles of Ladonna. “She elevates a part of herself to feel in control.”
King plays Rev Johnson, a man who came into a powerful and wealthy family in the 1990s. “He’s split,” said King. “Then suddenly he was taken out of this inner struggle and then put into another inner struggle to respond to this new time and new era. He’s fighting over how he feels and how he should feel. According to the description he is developing into a natural leader of the 4400. “
There are travelers who go back several decades. Ladymore shared that Claudette, the wife of a 1950s preacher, “has a savagery and fire in her than she was in her own time. She has an intense loyalty to the people she loves and who she loves. “
The chess player Hayden was born in the 1930s. Amarr said, “He really underestimated himself by a long way. He’s starting to see more of what he can do. He’s not shy, he’s more reserved, thinks before speaking. He operates on a different level than everyone else, but he doesn’t know how to put it. ”Hayden faces tribulation:“ When something happens to his mother, he learns to take care of himself. His family is not necessarily the best and he is institutionalized as a test person. ”
The reboot is mostly black, and the commercial and premise suggest that the show will unfold different dynamics among blacks from different eras. Thompson, who plays the 1924 character Andre, said, “I’ve never seen science fiction with so much melanin.” They continued, “I’ve never seen science fiction based on our current time. Much science fiction is world building. It is so nice that this is our world. “
The first episode of 4400 will be premiered on October 25th at the CW.
