Marvel’s Avengers adds paid XP boosts, though Square Enix says it wouldn’t happen

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics revealed that Marvel’s Avengers now supports the ability to spend real money on boosts for XP and resources.

The superhero title was recently released for Xbox Game Pass, adding the ability to purchase consumables with credit that can only be obtained by spending your own hard-earned money. These purchases are used to temporarily increase how much XP you earn or to increase the number of resources you have earned.

People are not happy about it, because it goes back to a statement by Senior Community Manager Meagan Marine at E3 2019: “Our promise to the community is that we will not have random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios.”

This was reiterated on the game’s official blog in September 2020:

We are committed to ensuring that content that can be purchased for real money in Marvel’s Avengers is purely aesthetic additions that ensure we can keep the game fresh for years to come. For some, writing has been on the wall for a while as Crystal Dynamics slowed the speed at which players could level up in March 2021.

Marvel’s Avengers is out now for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X / S and Xbox One.
