We are very excited to share the latest edition of The long darknessWintermute’s story mode with Xbox players today. This is just another milestone in the history of the close collaboration between Hinterland and Xbox that led up to the launch of. goes back The long darknessXbox Game Preview in 2015.
Back then, The long darkness was already a success on PC, but we didn’t have any specific plans to bring the game to console. That changed during a phone call with the team at at the end of 2014 [email protected]when they announced their plans to offer an Early Access program, a first for consoles. They asked if we wanted to help with the release and we stepped in, determined to be among the first games available on consoles this way. And so, in 26 days, with some diligence, we went from having no Xbox builds (at all), going well on the platform and through certification, ready to go.
This work culminated in our being available as one of the first two launch titles for the Xbox Game Preview at E3 2015! It was a big moment for our little studio to have a game featured in the Microsoft Media Event and alongside huge first-party giants like gloriole and War gears, and start the first day of E3.
To be cemented in the game preview The long darkness‘s place on Xbox, and it helped us build a community of gamers who have stayed with us to this day. And this group has only grown since we brought with us The long darkness to Xbox Game Pass in 2020. Some of our most passionate gamers play on Xbox.
Today we are happy to share Episode 4: anger, then silence. It continues the story of the bush pilot Will Mackenzie on his search for Dr. Astrid Greenwood in the cold, dangerous wilderness of Great Bear Island in deep northern Canada. A mysterious aurora in the sky seems to disrupt everything electrical, and as a result, Mackenzie, Astrid, and everyone they encounter struggle to survive the harsh winter and brutal wildlife, all without the man-made comfort we all are for hold of course. Episode 4 raises the stakes by introducing a gang of bloodthirsty convicts eager to make their mark on Great Bear and take advantage of these new circumstances. Will Mackenzie survive this new threat and continue his search for Astrid?
We call our setting the “silent apocalypse”. It’s not your typical end-of-the-world scenario with zombies, aliens, or supernatural beasts. Only humanity facing our over-reliance on technology and the loss of skills and community that leave us vulnerable when we find society turned upside down. Mother nature is in charge and is neutral towards your existence. This is a topic that, while we started researching years ago, has become unexpectedly relevant in the past 18+ months of the COVID lockdown. Our greatest joy is to hear that players feel a sense of comfort and thoughtful escape into the silent wilderness of. Experienced The long darkness. Because of this, we do the things we do – to deeply touch the players.
With the launch of Episode 4 today, we turn our minds to Episode 5 and the completion of our Wintermute story mode, as well as the ongoing plans to support Survival Mode in our quest to create the best survival game in the world. Thank you to the Xbox gamer community for all of the years of support – all the feedback you’ve shared, all the times you’ve told your friends to try the game, and all the little chances that you have You enrich the community of The Long Dark. We are eternally grateful.
The years behind us are nothing compared to the years ahead. Have fun episode four, and see you in the silent apocalypse.
