App Store payments anti-competitive, rules Dutch Antitrust Authority | Pocket Gamer.biz

The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has found Apple’s in-app payment system to be anti-competitive after an investigation into the company’s store policies.

As reported by Reuters, the Dutch competition authority first launched an investigation into Apple’s market position in 2019, which was later restricted to dating apps.

The investigation included a complaint from Match Group, the owner of several dating platforms, including Tinder and Hinge.

The dating conglomerate claimed that Apple’s anti-competitive policies impede direct communication with its consumers regarding payments.

Last month, the ACM informed Apple of its research results and instructed the Silicon Valley technology company to change its in-app payment system. It’s worth noting that the ACM has not fined Apple.

A court spokesman confirmed the existence of the case to Reuters but was unable to reveal when a decision is expected.

ACM, Apple and the Match Group declined to comment. The case is currently under legal review and is currently not open to the press or the public

Apple has petitioned the Rotterdam District Court for an injunction to block publication of the verdict during the company’s appeal.

The investigation and litigation are the most recent legal proceedings against Apple in which the parties cite anti-competitive practices on its app store.

Last month, after a long-running legal battle with Epic Games, Apple was served a permanent restraining order from a California court ordering price transparency.

As of December 9, Apple will no longer be able to prevent developers from inserting external links that direct users to payment systems beyond Apple’s control that will bypass the 30 percent cut.

In August, Apple made several clarifications on payments that gave developers more flexibility in highlighting payment methods outside the App Store, including increasing the number of price points in the App Store from less than 100 to over 500.
