“Political activist” is the most polite way to describe him.
One of Japan’s most notorious composers and a pillar in the Dragon Quest series has died.
A statement from Square Enix announced that Koichi Sugiyama, who composed the music and sound effects for the 1986 original Dragon Quest series, died on September 30, 2021. The cause of death was septic shock, a sudden drop in blood pressure after infection.
As a seasoned composer, Sugiyama has been known for his extreme nationalism in recent years, including signing a full-page letter from the Washington Post denying an apology for Japan’s use of “comfort women” during World War II. He was also a well-known denier of the Nanjing massacre and rejected the high suicide rates among Japanese LGBT + youth in 2015.
