Gearbox Software has announced that former Chief Technology Officer Steve Jones will become the new President of Gearbox Software after renaming the leadership. Gearbox Entertainment co-founder Randy Pitchford will continue to serve as CEO and President of Gearbox’s parent company and will shift focus to film and television as President of the newly formed Gearbox Studios.
Was that confusing? Well buckle up. Basically, the Gearbox video game development wing responsible for games like Borderlands is now led by Jones. Meanwhile, Gearbox’s parent company, Gearbox Entertainment (which was acquired by Embracer Group earlier this year) continues to be overseen by Pitchford.

In addition, Pitchford will serve as president of a new division called Gearbox Studios, which will oversee the company’s film and television projects, starting with the upcoming live-action film Borderlands.
In one tweet, Pitchford stated that he will be responsible for “high level creative and business strategy” and also serve as the “hybrid” chief creative officer if necessary. That said, Pitchford will continue to offer advice on various creative projects at Gearbox.
Jones, meanwhile, will lead all production and development activities at Gearbox’s game studio and oversee the several AAA games currently in development.
Gearbox was founded in 1999 and has worked on projects such as Half-Life, Brothers in Arms, Duke Nukem, Aliens and Borderlands under Pitchford over the years. An official Borderlands film starring Cate Blanchett was announced in 2020, expanding the company’s presence on film.
Gearbox Studios is currently developing Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a Borderlands spinoff set in a twisted fantasy tabletop RPG.
