While work on the GoNintendo overhaul continues, I am still working on some projects on Tiktok. I recently put together a video review of Hot Wheels Unleashed, which turned out to be a MUCH, MUCH better game than I expected! You can check out this review above or read the review’s script below.

As for the GoNintendo overhaul, it’s going very well! Lots of exciting things are happening, including a very productive meeting yesterday. We’re definitely at the point where things really come together. Hopefully in the not too distant future I have a thing or two to show you instead of just hinting at!

Last but not least, the posts on GoNintendo Patreon continue. Lately we’ve had some fun discussions about the Mario animated movie, Metroid Dread, the Switch OLED model, and more. There are some personal tidbits too. Thanks to everyone who supports us there!

As always, I’ll keep you updated on the big strides in the GoNintendo overhaul. Rest assured, there is a lot going on behind the scenes! It’s a very exciting time and I can’t wait to get back to normal. See you next time, gang!

There is no shortage of racing games on the Switch. The eShop is filled to the brim with titles in the genre, including arcade style, karting, simulation, and more. There are plenty of decent racers to be found, but it takes something more to stand out. The Hot Wheels brand is certainly drawing some attention as it has been a high profile toy brand for over 5 decades. Of course, a recognizable name doesn’t immediately mean a game is good. Thankfully, even in the case of Hot Wheels Unleashed, the game really deserves its iconic name.

Most of us played with Hot Wheels cars both indoors and out back then, and Hot Wheels Unleashed aims to recapture that same spirit. Race tracks are set up in everyday places like bedrooms, back alleys, construction sites, etc. The tracks themselves are built with all of the classic Hot Wheels accessories you know and love. Corkscrew towers, giant loops, and miles of bright orange railroad tracks are woven into these locations, with races leading you from the bottom of the basement steps to the ceiling lights. Hot Wheels Unleashed’s tracks are the ones we would have built as kids if our parents hadn’t been so busy!

Just like the tracks themselves, Hot Wheels Unleashed is packed with a litany of nostalgic cars. With a collection of 66 cars to unlock from day one, you’re likely to see a handful of classics that are instantly recognizable. Even some of the licensed properties made it, including the Batmobile, Knight Rider, KITT, the Ninja Turtle party car, and many others. The combination of all of these infamous cars driving side by side only helps to make the racing experience even more enjoyable.

As for the race, it’s pretty easy, but incredibly fun. There are no weapons here to throw at your opponents. Your placement in a race is based on driving skills and boosting. You build up thrust slowly as you drive, but you can gain it much faster by drifting. Drifting is absolutely crucial in Hot Wheels Unleashed as there are loads of extreme turns to be made. You’ll have a decent time drifting on the track and it feels absolutely awesome. The sheer sense of speed, your car racing across the track, and 11 other racing drivers vying for position all the time make for a much more intense racing environment than you might expect!

The sheer fun of racing makes up for the lack of variety in your goals. In single player, you’ll work your way through a map littered with standard races, boss races, and time attacks. Standard and Boss races are pretty much the same, only with difficulty choosing. Time Attack is self explanatory, but the times for each track are quite challenging. As you complete the various racing objectives, you will get customization options, equipment to upgrade cars, blind boxes of new cars, and more. The unlocks, coupled with how different each car feels, and the general challenge of the races should keep you busy.

There are other reasons to come back too, like local and online multiplayer, a track editor, room customization, and some other superfluous stuff. All in all, Hot Wheels Unleashed is a real treat, thanks to the well thought-out route design, adrenaline-charged races and the intelligent implementation of nostalgic elements. There is no doubt. Hot Wheels Unleashed is truly one of the best arcade racers in the last few years.
